gdceurope1.jpgPreparations for this year’s GDC Europe event in Cologne, Germany are well underway, and today GDC officials are excited to confirm another pair of great talks for the upcoming August conference.

The GDC Europe Independent Games Summit is back, and this year it features Croteam’s Alen Ladavac diving into his studio’s workflow in a talk entitled “Fast Iteration Tools in the Production of The Talos Principle.”

Croteam is a small studio with outsized goals, and to make big games they’ve developed tools and processes with an eye towards keeping their team working as efficiently as possible. Catch Ladavac’s talk to learn how Croteam optimizes things like content editing, source control, automated testing to build big games without sacrificing quality.

Learn about player behavior and DX12 tech in first GDC Europe 2015 talks

gdceurope1.jpgGame Developers Conference officials have fielded a ton of great pitches during the recent GDC Europe 2015 call for lectures, and today they’re happy to share details on the first of many talks that will take place during the August conference.

The conference, organized by UBM Tech Game Network and now in its seventh year, will be held Monday and Tuesday, August 3-4 at the Congress-Centrum Ost in Cologne, Germany, co-located with Europe’s biggest video game trade and public show gamescom.

The event will include talks on everything from AAA to indie to mobile games. The first two announced sessions address new game tech and design principles, and they should offer learnings for the entire community.

GDC Europe welcomes new board members ahead of 2015 show

gdceurope1.jpgAs the industry gears up for GDC Europe, show organizers are excited to announce that a pair of game industry veterans have joined the event’s main advisory board and Indie Games Summit board to help program the lectures and panel sessions taking place at this year’s conference in Cologne, Germany, alongside the Gamescom trade fair.

The GDC Europe advisory board, which includes game industry notables like Rovio’s Katharina Hautz, CD Projekt Red’s Bartlomiej Gawel, DICE creative director Lars Gustavsson, and Rocksteady Studios’ David Hego, is very excited to welcome its newest member: Kalypso Media Group global managing director Stefan Marcinek.

Stefan Marcinek has also worked in the game industry as a freelance editor since 1998. From 2000 to 2001 he was the editor in chief of the German headquarters of Gameloft, and after a short adventure as a PR manager he opened the indie-focused publisher Comport Interactive in 2003. In August 2006 he and his business partner founded Kalypso Media.

Registration is now open for GDC Europe 2015

gdceurope1.jpgGDC Europe is making a triumphant return to Cologne, Germany this summer and today is the day to register early at a discounted rate.

Organizers of the Game Developers Conference announced today that early registration for GDC Europe 2015 has officially opened, and there’s no better place to find the essential pan-European perspective of game development and business trends currently happening throughout the continent.

Organized by UBM Tech Game Network, the event, now in its seventh year, will run Monday through Tuesday, August 3rd and 4th at the Cologne Congress-Centrum Ost in Cologne, Germany.

Register by July 8th and you can save 200 euros on an All Access Pass. In addition, this year sees the return of the GDC Europe Student Pass, a more affordable alternative to the All Access Pass created specifically for qualified students interested in learning and networking at the conference.

Q&A: Broken Sword creator reflects on the industry’s evolution

The seminal 1996 adventure game Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars wasn’t Charles Cecil’s first project, but for many developers it was the first title that offered a glimpse at what a dramatic, narrative-driven adventure game with a cheeky sense of humor could be.
The game proved to be a remarkable success for Cecil and Revolution Software, the U.K.-based company he cofounded in 1990. At that point Revolution had already released a number of adventure games, most notably the influential Beneath A Steel Sky, and after Shadow of the Templars debuted Cecil went on to direct a variety of Broken Sword games alongside other projects — most recently releasing the second half of Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse in April after having successfully Kickstarted its development in 2012.
Next week he’s traveling to Germany to deliver a Broken Sword Classic Game Postmortem at GDC Europe 2014 in Cologne, an event that aims to shed light on some of the most interesting and important work being done by European game developers.
We recently caught up with Cecil via Skype to learn more about his experience in the industry, what drives him to continue making narrative-driven adventure games and how the business of making games has changed in the wake of Kickstarter’s success. Here’s an edited transcript of our conversation.

The 2014 Game Developers Conference Europe kicks off next week, so we’re taking a moment to highlight some of the events and guidelines you’ll want to know about before you get to the show.
Advance online registration for next week’s conference has now closed, but you can still register onsite at the registration desks in the Congress-Centrum Ost Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany. The registration area is open for varying lengths of time from Sunday through Wednesday, March 10-13, and you can find the exact hours on the GDC Europe 2014 Registration page.

With GDC Europe 2014 less than a week away and the session schedule finalized, we’ve taken the liberty of highlighting a collection of can’t-miss sessions for the event.
